How to Pay for Travel

Probably the biggest concern I hear about travel is how to pay for it.

While we in the USA consider travel and vacations a luxury they are really part of our emotional and mental health. But economics always play a part in everything we do.

Here are a few ideas:

Setup a savings account solely for travel- If you can afford to save $100 a month, in one year, you can save enough for a 7 day cruise for two people.  If its only $50 a month, you can have a long weekend.

Tell friends and family that instead of buying you gifts or gift cards, have them write a check and deposit it in your Travel Saving account.

The Unique Travel Events website offers a really easy way for you, or friends and family to build your travel account with the Honeymoon and Travel Registry account. You can sign up online and add to it any time you or anyone else wants.

If you plan your cruise for a year from today, you have 9-10 months to pay for your trip after a small deposit. This gives you time to put money away and know how much you need, very little guesswork.

We wish you happy travels!

Leis, Surf, Volcanoes and Snow

Hawaii brings visions of a hula dancers, warm sands, luaus and magnificent sunsets.

And all of that is true. But did you know that Hawaii consists of 132 islands, 6 of which are visited by tourists.

Before it was our state it was ruled by kings, the most famous, Kamehameha united the people and brought peace.

Waikiki is the beach we mainlanders usually think of and it is on Oahu, the heart of Hawaii.

The islands of Hawaii are just about the youngest on earth, which explains the volcanoes that are part of a national park on the Big Island.

Whether you are surfing the waves, climbing the mountains, taking in the sweet scent of an orchid or sipping the rich Kona coffee Hawaii is bound to give you the vacation of a lifetime.

Visit Hawaii anytime of year. You can cruise or fly but keep in mind it is 2500 miles from any land mass so leave time for traveling and then soak in the sun.

Fun Fact: It snows every year on Hawaii’s tallest peaks which are up to 13,000 feet high.

Want to sound like an ‘islander’? Ask for Shave Ice, the Hawaiin version of a snow cone.

Whatever your interests, take time to enjoy. If you don’t have time to figure out where to go or what to do call us at 703-350-2999 or email andrea@uniquetravelevents.com  and we will create your unique ‘Getaway’. Visit our website for more info.

Ask yourself this question the next time you are ready to make travel plans whether for work or pleasure, ‘what am I worth’, or perhaps what is my time worth? Would I rather spend it searching the internet for hotels and flights and figuring out how to entertain myself and my family or would I rather let someone else do that for me so I can make money or enjoy time with my loved ones?

Travel agents save you time, and their fees are paid by the hotels, cruise lines and vacation companies. So why waste your time, leave the ‘surfing’ to us.

Peaches, Kangaroos & Coca Cola

If kangaroos threw you off in guessing this weeks highlight state, don’t worry, who knew Georgia had kangaroos.

The Kangaroo Conservation Center one hour north of Atlanta is the largest outside of Australia. Take some time to get up close and personal to marsupials found on the other side of the world.

Yes there is a Peach County in Georgia with the Peach Festival that took place for the 24th time this June.

In 1886 when the Statue of Liberty was being constructed John Pemberton planted the seeds of a modern dynasty, Coca Cola.

Georgia has a deep history and interesting cities and towns. Our visit to Savannah was brief but interesting and fun. We got a quick view of the Mercer house made famous by John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. (I was lucky enough to meet him on my transatlantic cruise on the QM2 this summer. He is a gentle and truly nice man.) The best fried chicken I ever had was at the The Pirates House and your waiter will probably show you where the ghosts hang out.

Nature lovers have a great opportunity in both mountains and shore. Take a trip through the Magnolia Midland for a peek into Georgia’s woodland offerings.

Georgia is a diverse state that has given us presidents, music and more.

Travel Tales

Last time I wrote about Florida and that is where I spent last week, in Miami. The travel show I attended included a trip to Jungle Island, where I got to cuddle up to an alligator, pet a python and wave at a gorilla.

The opportunities for travel are so diverse that even the experts can be overwhelmed at the amount of possibilities. We learned about Chengdu, in the Sichuan province of China. If you want to hold a baby panda, that’s where you need to go.

I’m still digesting all the amazing places and ways of getting around from river cruise to camel rides.

The world is out there, dine on the sites, sounds and of course the food. Call us at 703-350-2999 to plan your next adventure, whether its across the county or across the ocean.

On the local scene:

We have the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap but we also have small venues for upcoming stars. My husband and I joined friends to see Mae at the Mead Lab Theater on G Street. What a treat, Rachel Hardin did a great job as Mae West. There is no promise as to what other shows will provide, but Mae was definitely a winner.

The Fountain of Youth

No its not free botox but it is an early claim for keeping young, the fountain of youth. Hundreds of years ago explorer Ponce De Leon ”discovered’ the Fountain of Youth in Florida. While proof of its powers are dubious, the park around it has great history and is even open for weddings.

Florida is known for its great beaches, from Miami to Cocoa Beach and more. Of course everyone knows about Orlando, Disneyworld and Universal Studios.

If you want to see alligators, try an Alligator Safari or visit Everglades National Park for gators and more.

Check out Tampa for golf, zoos and more theme parks.

Staycations

This is a great time of year to visit wineries check Virginia Wine for info on fairs and festivals.

For a kid, pet and grown-up friendly afternoon try the 17th Street Corridor Festival on Saturday.

Amazing Americans, from Nathan Hale to P.T. Barnum

Connecticut was home to both and many more people that built our great nation.

My experience in Connecticut reminded me that good things come in small packages. Learning about the people we have quoted, or think we quoted, read about and are part of our history truly comes to life here.

But there is more than history. Connecticut has golf courses, hiking, whitewater rafting and great bicycle paths.

For the art lover try the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, the oldest continually operated museum in the USA.

Getting back to quotes visit Mark Twain’s home for a in-depth insight of this American literary icon.

If the sea is what calls to you, then Mystic Seaport is a must.

Perhaps one of the most misunderstood men in entertainment, P.T. Barnum is delightfully and accurately represented in the Barnum Museum. Although the historic structure is under repair the museum is open and free to the public. Believe it or not, P.T. Barnum did not say ‘there is a sucker born every minute’.

PT Barnum Museum

Connecticut is about a 5 or 6 hour drive from the Washington DC area and you can pass through New York, stop to see a show and spend a great weekend in Connecticut.

We stayed at the Merrywood Inn Bed & Breakfast in Simsbury CT. They are not open all year but if you can catch them, its one of the best b&b’s I’ve stayed at.

The Small Wonder

This is one of the nicknames of Delaware, the ‘first state’.

Small wonder is a an appropriate name considering what it offers today and the people it has shared with the rest of the world. If you have ever been saved from choking by the Heimlich maneuver, send a thank you note to Henry Heimlich a native of Delaware.

Just how much can, Delaware, the second smallest state in the nation pack in for your ‘Getaway‘? The options are so diverse that a weekend is barely the beginning. If you are a history fan you can’t go wrong, from dinosaurs to The Revolution to the extravagant Victorian era you will find something that tickles your fancy.

How about something to make your blood race? Whether you enjoy the elegant and intense experience of watching our equestrian friends take to the track or get immersed in the glamour of light and sound in the casino, Delaware Park your needs will be met, even if you want to play on the green outside.

Any art and nature lovers out there? From the Winterthur estate to the Delaware Art Museum and more you can relax in the wonders of nature and gifts of American artists.

We can’t forget the beaches for summer fun or even into the fall check out Bethany Beach.

With Delaware being only about a three hour drive it’s a great place for a ‘Getaway’.

Riveting Revelation: Rivers are the highways of the past. Today river cities are becoming the great places to visit and river cruises are the hot new way to travel. Travel & Leisure has listed America’s Coolest River Walks and Viking River Cruises are a great way to explore Europe, China and Egypt.

Pike's Peak or bust

We probably remember that line from cartoons, but Colorado is home to Pike’s Peak (great history with that) and many more wonderful sites.

Most of us know about Vail, certainly for its skiing, but did you know it has a Ski Museum and its not about Olympics. Then of course Denver, the literally Mile High City presents the visitor with the Old West and modern technology, side by side. If you love the history of the old west and characters like Buffalo Bill then this stop is a must for you. Don’t worry, everyone will find something to please them from museums to amusement parks.

For you archeology fans, Denver is a gold mine. A visit to Dinosaur is an experience that will require many photos so bring an extra memory card.

Colorado offers us the romance of the past, including steam engine train rides and rodeos as well as ski slopes and museums.

If you’re staying in town then here are a few fun things to do this week:

Try out the Blair Mansion Mystery Dinner Theater

For you Parrotheads, Jimmy Buffett will be at Nissan Pavilion

If four-legged friends are up your alley, try the Warrenton Horse Show

Dwelt a miner forty niner…

Can you remember where that line is from? I’ll make it easy, Clementine, one of those songs you sang around the campfire or on a roadtrip. But Clementine is not the focus of this week’s blog, but her location is, California.

The diversity of this state can be related to its size. For us east coast denizens, picture driving from the northern tip of New Jersey to halfway down the North Carolina coast and that is the length of California.
Its climate and culture range from the rustic and cool north to the waves and star-studded south.

If you are planning a trip out west The Avenue of The Giants is a site not to be missed. Of course any wine lover must take in the complexity of the Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley.

Young or old Disney is an icon that holds a place in everyone’s heart. Take a day to visit Disneyland.

I could spend days writing about all the places to visit in California. Let’s just say it’s worth the trip and more, whether you want to try and rub elbows with a star in Hollywood, take a look into the Gold Rush days, marvel at Death Valley or ride the waves the one thing you can be sure of, you won’t be bored.
